Today we watched an interview hosted by Stephen Colbert, with Neil deGrasse. While watching the interview each individual had to choose a quote that stood out to them then after they were to answer 3 questions (as you see below). Though the task was to only choose 1 quotes a few of them stood out to me like:
"Is it better to know or not know?"
"Should scientist be able to do whatever they want?"
"Science is distrusted, not because of what it can do, but how it does what it can do"
"Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean its bad for you, go figure out how it works first then decide if its bad for you or not."
Quote I chose:
"Discovery itself is not moral, its the application of it that has to pass the test" -Niel dG
I chose this quote because science is always misinterpreted. It can be recognized as, "too hard" or "only for smart people" or even "scary". But I realize that science is basically getting answers and clarity to nature and even unanswered mysteries in;of this world. Without brave people like scientist we wouldn't be able to invent stuff and have an understanding behind why it does what it does.
What this quote means to me that science shouldn't be something to be afraid of or even unthought of. Yes, people have used the power of science to harm others but yet others have used it to find cures and answers to complicated stuff. It also means that just because someone experiments something doesn't mean that they are creators that advocate to horrible things such as war, etc.
The thoughts that it provokes to me is, without science what kind of world would we be in? I sort of feel like we would live in a world of ignorance, unclarity, and lack of knowledge. I imagine going to school and asking a teacher "why does this work the way it does" and getting a respond like " I don't know, It just does." Just by thinking of that I feel annoyed and even more curious. Science is key to answers.
