Yesterday we had a make up lab for the dry ice lab. The whole point of this was to analyze the different between solids and gasses. Basically dry ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide which is why we used it to test the gasses it maintains and what it is capable of.
What we did was dropped a piece of ice into the water and right away it reacted to it. I didn't think anything was going to happen because its ice and usually we put ice in our water. But this isn't just ice, as i mention its dry ice which maintains frozen carbon dioxide so it reacts to water because it releases gas while its defrosting. In the picture above you can see fog inside the cup, which is the reaction. We also did a balloon experiment where we put 1.5 cm of dry in the balloon and in 2-5 minutes it inflated and it was about 16 cm diameter wide. This tells me that the molecules are separating to create gas so that the balloon can inflate.
After all that we had a little extra ice to play around with and we ended up seeing what happens if we stick a quarter in the ice. Though the video doesn't show everything in the beginning when we were sticking the quarter into the ice it made a screeching sounds then it stayed in place and shivered and then finally it froze completely.
